Severe Weather Preparedness

Severe weather events can occur at any time and impact your trees and property. In our Southeastern United States region, these events tend to become more frequent during this season. Such storms pose potential dangers and can have devastating effects on communities and their tree population. Trees play a vital role in our ecosystem, and our goal is to consistently maintain the urban canopy. While it’s impossible to completely eliminate the risk associated with trees, steps can be taken to reduce it to a level that aligns with your personal comfort.

We’ve outlined some precautionary measures you can consider taking before a significant weather event to prepare for potential tree-related emergencies.

  1. Observe how your trees respond during typical wind conditions.
Monitoring your trees closely is crucial since you have a front-row view of their behavior on your property. Your familiarity with your trees’ normal behavior is unmatched. Compare the movement of your trees to similar ones in the vicinity. For example, pine trees often sway and bend during strong winds. If you notice a pine tree that remains rigid and inflexible, it’s advisable to conduct a closer inspection.
  2. Avoid making significant alterations to your tree’s wind load just before a weather event.
Trees acclimate to their surroundings, and sudden changes can disrupt this balance. If you remove all trees from your property except for one just before a major weather event, that lone tree may become more vulnerable to failure. It’s essential to consider the impact of modifications on your tree’s ability to withstand changing conditions.

  1. Ensure your trees receive proper care during the scorching summer months preceding hurricane season.
By mulching and watering them during the dry season, your trees become better equipped to handle the saturated soils that come with heavy rainfall in the rainy season.
  2. Prioritize the removal of dead or dying branches before storms strike.
Dead branches are prone to falling, especially in severe weather conditions. Addressing them proactively reduces the risk of them causing damage to your property, such as falling on your roof, fence, or car.
  3. Be prepared by knowing your insurance information and the appropriate contacts in case of emergencies.
During emergencies, your home may become inaccessible or your documents unavailable. In such situations, your first call should be to your insurance company. They can provide guidance on how to handle the situation and often recommend reputable tree care companies.
  4. Act promptly and avoid delaying.
Tree service providers are in high demand during and after storms. The sooner you make the call, the quicker the response can be. Keep in mind that each company has a limited capacity for work, so if you require assistance, it’s advisable not to wait. After consulting with your insurance provider, your second call should be to a certified arborist.
  5. Lastly, nurture your trees with regular care.
We strongly recommend scheduling an annual visit from your arborist. With a consistent appointment, your arborist can identify potential issues that may have gone unnoticed, recommend plant healthcare treatments, prevent future problems, and ensure your trees remain vibrant and healthy.
As you watch the weather forecast, we hope that you and your family stay safe and healthy during the storm season. In the unfortunate event that your property sustains damage, please know that we are here to provide assistance.

Arborist Consultation – What to Expect?

What can you expect during your arborist consultation?

Our office frequently receives calls regarding tree removal or the inspection of worrisome trees from our clients. When reaching out to a tree company, the expectation is for the person you contact to provide a quote for tree removal. However, contacting an arborist offers a greater wealth of information due to the extensive education and experience required to attain certification as an arborist. While they can certainly offer a quote for tree removal a skilled arborist goes beyond merely discussing the cost involved. They provide a much more comprehensive experience, offering valuable insights and expertise.

The arborist may mention alternatives to the service you are asking for.

There may be solutions that help retain the urban canopy. If the tree can be maintained in a manner that reduces the overall risk to a comfortable level, your arborist may discuss pruning options or other alternatives that can help prolong the life of your tree. Trees that are diseased or have insect activity may have other alternative options besides removal. Our plant healthcare team can treat a variety of common tree ailments that improve the overall health of the tree and help mature trees live longer.

The arborist may comment on other trees on your property.

Our arborists are trained to recognize signs and symptoms that trees may need extra attention. This can often include things that are not visible to the untrained eye. Or it simply may be that a homeowner’s attention is focused on the dead tree next to the house instead of the dead limb over the driveway. Either way, do not be surprised if the arborist notices other trees on your property that need attention. They simply provide information for the benefit of your trees and property.

How long does a consultation last?

We set aside an hour for your arborist to meet with you and discuss the trees on your property. This hour is your time to ask any questions that you may have. Most consultations do not take that long, however it greatly depends on the number of trees on your property, the size of your property, and how many questions that you have.

What if it takes longer?

Do you have multiple acres with trees that need a great amount of attention and care? A tree that needs closer inspection or something in writing? Please mention that before we visit your property. We are happy to schedule extra time and provide additional recommendations, however we only allocate an hour to most properties. Our initial consultation is complimentary in most cases, however there are situations that require a fee. If you require a written report, would like to have a consultation for tree identification on a large property, or need the information for purposes of purchasing a house, we may request a fee, however this will always be made clear before we provide the service.

What if I just want the quote for removing a tree – I don’t want anything else?

Certainly! If you simply desire a quote for tree removal without any additional information, that’s perfectly okay! Just inform us that you’re solely interested in discussing the specific tree removal, and we’ll fully respect your boundaries and time constraints. Your needs and preferences are important to us, and we’re here to accommodate them in the most convenient way possible.

Is it okay to call with questions afterwards?

Absolutely! Feel free to reach out with any questions or inquiries you may have. We highly value open communication and strive to establish enduring relationships with our clients. Building trust is paramount to us, so if our service ever falls short of expectations, we are committed to going the extra mile to rectify it. We welcome your feedback and are eager to ensure your satisfaction with our services.
